I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who felt that we were a little hard done by to come away from Wolves without anything the other night.
As performances go, I thought we played well. We were solid, organised, and didn’t take the risks that we have taken at times this season. I’m sure some people will argue that they would have preferred to see that – especially seeing as we lost the game anyway – but I thought we approached the game in the right way and were only undone by a freak of bad luck when Adama Traore’s shot came back off the bar and rebounded back off Meslier.
I’ve said before that Wolves are a good example to Leeds with the way they have gone about things since being promoted to the Premier League. Attacking wise they are one of the best and were always going to be a good test for Leeds. If you’re not at it against Wolves they are capable of taking you apart, but I thought we more than dealt with them. Positionally, I thought Marcelo got it right after the Arsenal game, and I think that showed in the way we defended.
Wolves had a couple of real good spells in the game – which you’d expect given their quality and the fact they were at home – but we dealt with them and restricted them. Liam Cooper looked a lot more comfortable with Pascal Struijk back in there and Meslier showed that he wasn’t affected by the Arsenal game and did well.
The big talking point was of course Patrick’s disallowed goal. The linesman flagged for offside, and when it went to VAR it was almost impossible to make a call because it was so tight. In the end, it went against us which was a real shame because it was such a great strike. The finish was that of a striker who is bang in form and is oozing with confidence, and I felt for Pat that he didn’t get his reward.
That’s the way it goes sometimes, though, and it’s straight back to it this week with Southampton at Elland Road on Tuesday.
